Xavier update by Mr Betts
Xavier is at school two hours a day at the moment. He starts at nine and finishes at eleven am. He is now staying for morning tea till eleven twenty and he is very happy that he is allowed to play in the playground.
I have him from ten thirty till eleven and sometimes I work with him in the class while at other times I take him out of class to help him focus on the task at hand. This is usually class work that we need to work on.
He often says he is tired but I repeat to him often that he is only at school two hours a day for work and so he needs to try and focus at these times and try and get as much use out of his brain as possible. He needs to show he can work well and follow instructions for that amount of time, getting his work done in the time he has. If he can show this then the school will be able to extend his time at school. Which is something he wants to do.
He is very easily distracted and finds it very hard to stay on task for any more than a minute or so. He has to be constantly refocused back on the task at hand.
Today we are learning about thinking questions
Mr Mitchell read us a poem. It is about a girl and her mother arguing about dress's, her mum wants her to wear a different dress than her blue dress.

We are letter writing in class
I am writing to Dan Carter,
we are learning to...
write letters to people, using open questions with words like how, when, where
Mr Betts said that if I write a good letter he will try and give it to one of the Crusaders or Richie Macaw to pass on to Dan who we think is in France at the moment. Mr Betts lives in the neighborhood where they all train and he sees them about quite often.
Our draft letter so far:
Xavier O'Brien
Linwood North School
Christchurch
10 February
Dear Dan Carter
My name is Xavier. I am 9 years old. I am a student at Linwood North School. We are learning to write letters with open and closed questions. Can I please ask you some questions about yourself?
When did you first start playing rugby?
What sort of training did you do?
Who was your best friend at school and what did you do with them?
What do you do in your spare time?
What is it like to be a dad?
Thank you for reading my letter. Please write back because if you do I would be the most popular boy at school.
Yours sincerely
Xavier O'Brien

Goals for the Term
Be able to play in the playground.
To succeed at this I need to:
*be responsible and respectful
What does this look like in the classroom?
I would be sitting up straight with my arms folded.
I would be doing what the teacher said.
I should use my WITS
I need to find out what WITS stands for.
W could stand for... watch the clouds, wave, wiggle wiggle wiggle.
Walking away!
I could stand for... ice cream, ice skating,
Ignore!
T could stand for tickle, travel to Triton (moon of Neptune),
Talk!
S could be for sitting down, shaking, swimming, Sudan, Sweden, Swaziland
But S IS FOR SEEK HELP!

Today in class!
We were listening to Mr Mitchell read us a story. There was a series of stories in the one book. The story we listened to was called "Maui asked his grandmother for fire"

We watched a video of how full is your bucket.

It is not about a bucket, it is about feelings. When our bucket is full we are happy. When it is half full we are tired.
